Part-Time Middle School Visual Arts Teacher (Temporary)

Department: High School Administration
Location: HONOLULU, HI

SALARY RANGE: $53,680 - $112,672 Annually, based on FTE, degree, and student contact hours.

JOB SUMMARY

  • Teach visual arts, which may include Certificate Studio, Advanced Middle/High school courses. Topics may include fundamentals of visual art and 2D/3D Visual art.
  • Support MPSA Certificate students: Feedback on portfolios and exhibit artwork.
  • Design inquiry-driven instructional environments that motivate students to develop technical and conceptual art skills.
  • Exemplify the habits and attitudes of an artist.
  • Develop and showcase student portfolios to demonstrate skills and readiness for post-secondary education or careers in the arts.
  • Use all resources effectively.
  • Build strong relationships with students, parents, colleagues, administrators, community.
  • Participate actively in school operations.
  • Uphold deeper learning principles.
  • Regular and predictable attendance at work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Teach Middle and High school fundamentals of visual art, 2D/3D Visual Art, and Certificate Studio advanced-level courses.
  • Use student-centered strategies and media, differentiating instruction to meet individual student needs.
  • Engage in drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, photography, and assemblage.
  • Prepare and execute lesson plans according to the curriculum and assessment guidelines set by the department, school, and external examining bodies.
  • Set and post homework assignments weekly online using the school’s information system program.
  • Prepare and administer formative and summative assessments of students’ learning; record students’ progress and post feedback electronically consistently, as set by department and administration standards.
  • Maintain effective classroom management, liaising with deans and parents as necessary.
  • Collaborate with visual and digital media faculty to integrate digital and visual arts programming and exhibitions.
  • Attend occasional afterschool hours student exhibitions.
  • Participate in all faculty and departmental meetings, attend professional development workshops, and attend educational conferences. Collaborate with department members in developing and updating the visual arts curriculum.
  • Purchase equipment and materials for courses taught.
  • Stay abreast of current research and develop professionally to improve teaching practice continually.
  • Carry out all homeroom / advisory responsibilities.
  • Determine budget needs and purchase equipment and materials for courses taught.
  • Regular and predictable attendance at work.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in ceramics, sculpture, installation, or site-specific works.
  • Previous teaching of International Baccalaureate Visual Arts (HL/SL), Yearbook, or visual art history.
  • Proficient use of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Animate, After Effects, Unity, GameMaker Studio, and Autodesk Maya in lessons with students.
  • Background incorporating educational technology into lesson design to enhance student learning.
  • Experience engaging with students in graphic/web design basics, digital illustration, logo design, and/or other multimedia art forms.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in coFine Arts (Master's preferred) in visual arts or related field. At least three years of industry/academic teaching experience at the secondary level is preferred.

WORK SCHEDULE

This position follows the academic calendar from August through May. Teachers will have the opportunity to enjoy scheduled winter, spring, and summer breaks for rejuvenation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Our campus consists of multiple buildings on 44 hilly acres that requires frequent walking including uphill and stairs. The employee on a daily basis is required to frequently, unless otherwise noted walk to and from classrooms or buildings within five minutes, lift and carry approximately 10-15 pounds (student journals, papers, books, etc.); arrange student desks, furniture in classroom as needed; stand and sit throughout the day for instruction and supervision of students; walk: class to chapel (once a week), walk around the classroom, from classroom to: copier room (frequently), library (occasionally), fields for fire drills (occasionally), to supervise students (daily); occasional bending; frequent reaching when writing on board, while at desk, for phone, to receive student work (this occurs throughout the day). Some climbing of stairs (daily); walking up a slight hill (daily).

MENTAL DEMANDS

On a daily basis employees must frequently problem solve, make decisions, supervise students/classroom management, interpret data, grade, organize, write, plan, and clearly communicate.
